Subject: #1 Post 1974 Jam Segment
Subject: #1 Post 1974 Jam Segment
It has been more than 20 years since I first heard this show and the 2nd set, Comes a Time through GDTRFB still gives me goosebumps as if its my first time hearing it. The only frustrating thing is the SBD, while clean, is just not quite right. It isn't flat, but it lacks roundness. Of the sources available, this AUD is definitely the way to go. And don't miss this 2nd set. The Comes a Time is stunning and features a jam that you'd expect to find in a 73-74 Dark Star, TOO, or Truckin. Then an equally mind bending TOO into a tremendous Eyes and back into TOO for 3 1/2 minutes of literal perfection. Then you can cool down with GDTRFB. I really can't praise the 2nd set segment highly enough. You will not find anything on that level on any other night post 1974.

This was my first Grateful Dead show. I didn't know what to expect, and we got there pretty late (they were playing Half-Step Mississippi), so the sound was as "distant" as this recording. But I "got" it and went back as often as I could for the next 16-17 years.

They put a massive speaker box in the orchestra pit to serve as a sort of subwoofer, I think it makes some of these audience recordings more bass and drum heavy. 7/16 is def. chunky to me.
They didn't do it anymore after this run!

Listen to these 76 shows drunk. No Kidding. Every time I do i appreciate the slow jam more and more. Nothing compares to this deliberate yet completely inspired playing. Absolutely wonderful! I think if you can't appreciate this Dead you'll get disinterested real quick. I'm listening to the SBD so I can say this show is close to perfect. Figured I'd post this under the Aud copy since we can't get the sbd anymore. I've been recording the high quality streams of sbd in real time using polderbits.com. It's not lossless but it is high quality MP3 of which I can't tell the difference. I say stick it to em'! Download the sbd in real time and take the time to make each track. It's Easy. It's practically as fast to download in real time as it is with most of the stuff in the bittorrent world. God this sugaree is sick!

Yes the sound is a little hissy but this is not the master and an audience so you have to cut this a little slack. I agree with Rob that the first set does not crunch it the way some other '76 shows do however it is definately worth hearing.
Set II however especially the jam from Comes a time on is ridiculous - Check out the funky riff they did on more than one occasion duh de deh de deh when they jam back into Other One you can cut the tension with a knife cause you are not sure whats next at 20:00 Phil starts going into Brown Eyed Women but Jerry will have not part of that the second verse must be sung!
In case you doubt this is a 5 ask yourself this in post '74 shows how many times did they do a double encore with a 19:00 stand alone NFA? Answer 1 - This show.

This is a *very* distant aud. I didn't burn it. There are very few shows I haven't burned after downloading and this is one of them. I can't comment on the playing.

I rate the second set jam 5 stars, as good as anything the Dead ever did. The rest of the show seems to just miss that level of greatness, unfortunately. I like the sound of the audience tape better than the soundboard.

the other one on this is off the charts and judging from the double us blues>NFA encore the band felt that way as well - this is a unique and funky and hard driving other one, this is long and very trippy but not slow and spacy the way alot of '74's were - jerry is leaning on the flanger just right and apparently they were no worse for the wear for donna being awol for all of set II.
Can see how the following night may overshadow this but this show stands alone just fine. Get this and thank you to whomever it was that donated it+
